Poker Run scheduled for Saturday February 18, 2012 has been CANCELLED Due to lack of snow...

January 2012 Newsletter

Where’s the Snow?

Define snow.  Snow is a form of perception within the Earth’s atmosphere in the form of crystalline water ice.  Consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds.  And when we don’t get snow what happens to a snowmobiler?  Depression sets in pretty darn fast, need we say more.  Ugh!

SVSR Poker Run

The date is creeping closer, which is suppose to be on Saturday, February 18th.

Will we have adequate snow?  We’re hoping so, but if not, we’re going to have to cancel.  Keep your eyes peeled to our website at www.suncookvalleysnoriders.com.  If we do cancel it’ll scroll across our home page.

Trail Connection to Epsom

The Epsom Fort Mountain Trailwinders have made a connection into our trail system.

This is good news for anyone wanting to travel towards the Epsom area.  To connect from our trail system into Epsom you would follow the trail that goes up over Catamount Mountain and crosses Johnson Road and 107.  Once crossing 107 you travel across the field and come out onto Hill Top Road and then you can continue straight or veer off the trail to the new trail on the right, which takes you across Tan Road into Metcalf’s fields.  The open field is  tempting, but please stay in the marked trail,  please do not wander.  After going through the field then the trail crosses Dowboro Road, near Barton Road then Range Road to New Orchard Road near Bickford’s.

Pittsfield’s Dunkin Donut Trail

Over the years this coffee trail has sort of ended up being a lost trail. Meaning that one could easily lose their way trying to get there, but not anymore!

Many thanks to all who spearheaded this project.  To those who helped clear debris from the trail, re-signing it and seeking landowner permission.  It has been reported that it does still need a little excavator work, but because of the frozen ground we will have to wait till things warm up before excavator work can get done. The trail is ready to be used but just won’t be groomed this year by our big groomers.

Here’s hoping we get some snow so we can try out both of these new trails.  Cross those fingers folks real hard!

Club’s Trip to the Town & Country Motor Inn

It’s scheduled for the weekend of February 10th and 11th.

This event will be discussed further at our next meeting.

Registrations Required

The following information was taken from the 2012 NH Off Highway Recreational Vehicle Laws Digest:

All snowmobiles and OHRV’s must be registered if operated off of the owner’s property.  A registration is a privilege to ride off of your own property on approved trails or with written landowner permission.  There are no additional trail user fees in NH.

Conventional motor vehicles (cars and trucks) that are legally registered as a motor vehicle and do not need an OHRV registration.  Motorcycles which are registered for highway use must have an OHRV registration to operate off road.

NOTE:  No registration is required for youth model ATVs, trail bikes or snowmobiles if the operator is less than 12 years of age and the youth is accompanied by a properly licensed adult.  To qualify, youth snowmobiles must be less than 125cc; youth ATVs and youth 2-wheel trail bikes less than 95cc.

Individuals may register at any one of the registration agents located throughout the state, and must apply in person.  Registrations may also be purchased at Fish and Game Headquarters or through the mail by contacting Fish & Game at (603) 271-4300.

A registration consists

certificate and 2 decals.  The registration certificate must be carried by the operator and the decals must be properly affixed to the OHRV or snowmobile.  Alteration of decals is prohibited.  On snowmobiles decals are to be placed one on each side of the cowling or on the outside of the windshield, clearly visible and not obstructed.

 Next SVSR Meeting

Bureau of Trails Forced to Cancel 2012 RTP Grant Round

(not so good news)

(Concord, NH-December 19, 2011) The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation’s Bureau of Trails announces that it is forced to cancel the 2012 Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant round due to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) making “technical corrections” to its funding formula.  The FHWA notified the Bureau last week that it had made recalculations to the federal funding formula for the years 2009-2012 and as a result $678,000 was taken back from the NH trail program.  All of the 2012 funds, $677,000 have been rescinded.

This is a major disappointment to NH’s trail community and trail projects that were planned for 2012,” state Bureau of Trails Chief Chris Gamache stated.  RTP funding is the only source available to non-motorized trails in NH and a major component of the motorized trail system also.

There were 55 organizations that were awarded grants in 2011 and the 2012 grant round was underway with a grant deadline in mid-January.  “We are completely stunned at the sudden e-mail from FHWA and this loss of funding,” said Gamache.

The FHWA administration made the announcement to the Bureau of Trails via e-mail last week.  “We are working with NH’s Congressional Delegation to determine how this formula change was made and the timing of the rescission of our trails funds,” commented Gamache.

The Recreational Trails Program is a federal grant program which is funded by gas tax of off-highway vehicle use nationally.  The funds taken back from NH do not impact projects approved and funding in 2011, but all projects planned for 2012.

SVSR Poker Run

Don’t forget we are planning on  Saturday, February 18th for our Poker Run event provided we have adequate snow.

Last year we had a good turnout, but were short handed and could of used more help especially with the cookout afterwards.  So we asking that if you think you can flip some burgers & dogs let us know.  Don’t be shy!

Ham & Bean Supper

Oh yeah, we had our Ham & Bean Supper at the Barnstead Parade Fire Station on November 12th and all went well.

We had 28 landowners come by and join us.   The meal was not only open to the public, but it was a way we said “thank you” to our landowners for letting us use their property.

A “thank you” to everyone who helped out before, during and after the meal.  And to those who donated beans and desserts.  Everything tasted really good.

Our frozen turkey drawing was won by Madison St. George, Laura Foss, and Michelle Gonzalas all 3 winners are from Pittsfield.  Congratulations turkey winners!

Trail Work Party

There will be no more snowmobiling along the side of Garland Road

Recent logging activity has allowed us to take advantage and reroute a portion of Corridor 17, which did run along side of Garland Road

The Trail Master and Administrator were out several weeks ago selecting the best route possible and then a volunteer work crew cleared the debris.  A volunteer also donated his service time and mini excavator to help smooth out this trail.  We appreciate this very much.  At that time trail signs were also re-posted.

Snowmobilers will now have a wider trail and less road to ride on.  There will be no more hazard of snowmobiles stopping in the plowed portion of the road where the trail junction use to be.  The new junction is now about fifty feet in the woods, certainly a much safer place to stop.

We thank our trail work crew.  They are certainly working hard to make sure the trails will be in tip top shape for us when the snow flies.

We salute you all.

Your efforts do not go unnoticed.   We thank you very much!

Trail Reporter

The NH Bureau of Trails is looking for someone in our area to report on our trail conditions when they are ready to ride.

They are looking for someone to  report twice a week.  If you think you are up for the task then give Brenda Drouin a call at DRED at (603) 271-3254 ext. 202, or e-mail her at Brenda.Drouin@dred.state.nh.us to discuss this further.

We Want Your (fun) Opinion!

SVSR Maps

At our last meeting there was discussion in regards to our trail map. It was suggested that we remove the year from the map.

Now, if we’re going to take the “year” off maybe this would be a good time  to see if there is an interest in developing a different style map.   Anyone interested in heading up a map committee?

If not, then we just stay with the same map. Plain and simple.  Let us know if you’re interested.

 Ham & Bean Supper

Trail Work Party

During the last month crews have been busy every weekend and  some weekdays  walking the trails, inspecting bridges and determining what needs to be brushed or cut away, and clearing known blow-downs.

On Sunday the 23rd they spent the morning in the woods marking the new trail between Bow Lake and Gray Road.  Next work party is Sunday, October 30th at 8:30 a.m.  Please call Scott at 776-8935 to find out where to meet.  They need your help!!!

NHSA Super Raffle Tickets

Selling these raffle tickets have become a yearly event for us.  And this year, it’s happening the weekend of October 22 & 23rd.  A Saturday and Sunday.

This time we will have three selling locations: ACE Hardware in Pittsfield, Danis Supermarket also in Pittsfield and Barnstead Country Store in Barnstead.

Matt Goodwin and Jen Elliott will be taking the “bull by the horn” and heading up this event.  We thank them for stepping up and overseeing the raffle ticket sales once again.

Ok, we’ve got the leaders so now all we need is the volunteers to help sell the tickets.  It’s not that hard really.  If you are one of the first to sign up you get the benefit of being able  to choose what day, time and where you want to be  before the schedule fills up.  So don’t delay.  We do need your help!

At our October 5th meeting Jen & Matt will have the ticket sale schedule ready for viewing, if you’re not at the meeting you can call Matt at 396-8841, or Jen at 783-6898 or e-mail them at travel@nhtourguide.com.  They will be happy to discuss the time slots available with you.

Folks!  In order for this event to be successful we have to have volunteers.  Last year Matt & Jen themselves filled in a lot of empty timeslots. Let’s not let that happen a again. We have over 400 club members.  With a membership figure like that we should have people coming out of the woodwork to help.  ☺ Please volunteer!

Town & Country Motor Inn

Your input is needed at our next meeting.  What do we want to do?

Snowmobile Safety Course & Ham & Bean Supper

We are looking to have both of these events on the same day on a Saturday in November.  We are thinking of either November 12th or November 19th. Stay tuned for more info. as we try to finalize everything at our next meeting.

Newsletters by E-mail

Some of you receive your SVSR Newsletters by e-mail while others receive it through the mail.  Last month we came across a slight glitch with our first newsletter going out.  We found out that those with a “worldpath” provider is now a tds.net provider instead.  We have corrected your e-mail address on our end and so this e-mail newsletter should be your first one of the season.  Sorry about that, but we weren’t aware of the change so your first newsletter came back to us.

Ski-Doo’s Million $ Club Support 2011

For each snowmobiler who participates in this program BRP and its dealers will donate $10 cash to the member's club.  That’s why it is so important to do it.  You didn’t have to work for it.  Easy money for the club.  The promotion goes from September 1, thru November 15, 2011.  If you have done it for us…..we thank you.

Planet Aid

Recycling Clothes for a Better World

Cleaning out your closet?  Any clothing or shoe items you don’t need anymore can be bagged and brought over to Route 28 Bakery & Dairy Bar in Chichester and dropped off in the yellow Planet Aid box sitting outside.

Your donation of clothing or shoes benefit people in 3 ways.  First, if you donate your items they are tax deductible to you.  Second, the items collected help people worldwide, and third who ever host a box on their property gets to choose a non profit agency who will receive 2 cents for every pound collected.  The Bakery has chosen the Suncook Valley Sno-Riders as their non-profit organization, and so far the club has received two checks totaling around $100.  At the club’s next meeting we will discuss what to do with the money.  Some suggestions are to forward the money on to a local food bank, or maybe increase (add it on to) our yearly donation we already make to Easter Seals.  So the more clothes that are deposited at the Bakery box the bigger the donation the club will make.  So we are calling on club members to drop off any recyclable items you may have in this box!  Planet Aid empties the box once a week.  We thank you!

Meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of every month from Sept. - April at 7:00pm at the Barnstead Parade Fire Station.

We love to see new faces! Come on by and help us with decisions on club trails, equipment and activities! Refreshments served after every meeting.

ATV & Dirtbike Owners

ATV’s/Dirt Bikes are not permitted on snowmobile trails unless a green ATV sign is visible.  Our club has worked hard to obtain permission from private landowners for snowmobile use only.  Please respect these generous landowner’s property and do not drive your ATV on snowmobile trails - it could result in a trail closure for all!
